Everything You Need to Know About Bachelor Party Planning

The bachelor party, which is thrown about a month before the wedding, is essentially the ultimate guys’ trip. This is one of the last events where you celebrate the groom-to-be before he gets hitched! Bachelor party planning can be complicated, but it’s all about picking an activity that suits the groom-to-be’s personality—from a round of golf to hitting the town.

If you’ve been selected to throw your friend’s bachelor party (this task is typically assigned to the best man), and have no idea where to start, we’re here to help! From selecting activities to setting a budget, here’s how to plan the bash step by step!

Get the groom-to-be on board
One of the first things you’ll want to do before you start any bachelor party planning is to ask the groom what he has in mind for the weekend. Set a time for you two to discuss party options. Figure out if he wants the boozing and clubbing bach party or a more laid-back outdoorsy trip. Going over different bachelor party ideas will let you know the style of party he wants. This is extra helpful when you start booking activities and finding a location. Also, this is a great time to get an idea of who he wants to invite. The bachelor party usually consists of the groomsmen, close friends, and even extended family of the groom-to-be. Just make sure you get the names of everyone the groom would like to celebrate with so you don’t end up forgetting someone!

Set a budget
After you’ve met with the groom and figured out the type of party he wants, you’ll want to come up with a set budget. Talk to the other groomsmen and guests to get a sense of a budget that’s reasonable for everyone. We suggest making a Facebook group or creating a group text thread where you can easily get in touch with one another and go over how much everyone can spend.

Pick a date
When you finally settle on a budget, you’ll want to find a day or weekend when everyone is available. You’ll want to pick a date at least four months before the bachelor party, so start early and get eliminate dates that don’t work for people. If you’re noticing a weekend getaway isn’t working out, be open to planning a trip that isn’t a multi-day bender. Just be flexible with date options, so you can set a date quickly and get the planning process moving along.

Find a location and book hotels
After you’ve found a date and confirmed the budget with everyone, you’ll want to pick a bachelor party destination. Think about places that suit the groom’s style—big cities are great if you’re looking to stay out late and party, but not so much if you’re looking for a more relaxing or outdoorsy weekend. If you are still not sure where to go, check out the top bachelor and bachelorette party destinations to help get inspired. Also, don’t feel pressured that you have to plan an out-of-town bachelor party—there are likely lots of great activities in the groom’s hometown so the crew doesn’t have to travel.

Figure out travel
The next step in bachelor party planning is figuring out travel plans. We suggest trying to travel together (it’s more fun that way!). See where each groomsmen is traveling from and, if it is possible, try and book flights together. Or, if some people are planning to drive, try and carpool or pick someone up on the way. Carpooling can save a little extra on gas money, too. Whichever way you all decide to travel, make sure you plan accordingly and book tickets fast.

Plan the itinerary
Once you’ve finalized the logistics of the bachelor party, you’ll then want to decide on the trip’s itinerary. This means finding activities that the groom-to-be would want to do on his bach trip. Some of our favorites include checking out a brewery if he is into craft beer, going fly fishing if he’s the outdoorsy type, or even attending a concert if he’s a music junkie. Also, this is the time to figure out how you will get to and from the hotel to the restaurant or activity. Do your research and find out if your bachelor party destination has ridesharing apps or taxi options.

Create a bachelor party playlist
Create a bachelor party playlist that you can play throughout the weekend. Whether you play it while everyone is driving or flying down, or blast it while you are pumping up the gang to go out, a playlist is key to getting the party going.

Stock the fridge
You’ll definitely want to stock up the fridge with all the necessities for the weekend. If you are planning a night for grilling out, you’ll want to make sure you have all the key ingredients such as steak sauce or other condiments and side dishes. Also, make sure to grab your buddy’s favorite beverage so you can crack open a cold one once everyone arrives!

Create a bachelor party hashtag
In order to relive all of the funny or crazy moments from the bachelor trip, you’ll want to make sure you create a personalized bachelor party hashtag. That way you easily upload photos throughout the weekend and have them all in one place. When the weekend is over and you’re feeling nostalgic, you can pull up the hashtag, browse, and hopefully laugh at all of the (hopefully not too embarrassing) photos from the weekend.
